For nearly 40 years, Karen Ponelli has been painting. Her paintings during this time have been represented in galleries, corporate collections, collected internationally and can be found hanging in many homes across the U.S. through working with interior decorators/designers.
Karen’s work has evolved over the years. Her dedication to be in her studio full-time is what has brought her work to where it is today. The Artist would describe her style as Contemporary.
Impressionism, Contemporary Realism, and Abstraction are all obvious in her work. She works intuitively and is very much inspired by nature. Shapes, movement, lines and textures are all incorporated. Her goal is to bring all of these attributes together aesthetically.
Karen’s paintings are known for and sought after for their sense of atmospheric peace. It can be felt by the viewer regardless of the subject and the Artist says this will always stand true in her work.
While continuing her artistic journey – Karen would describe herself as an Artist without boundaries. “Art is about setting your ideas free. Creating is freedom and after many years of painting professionally full time, it is part of my practice. I usually start out with a blank canvas and have somewhat of an idea, without a specific plan. Once an idea does develop I will try to create a series.
Karen is excited about a New Series underway Titled “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words”. New insights of figures, animals, objects in beach or landscape settings have been the focus. The painting Five Fish symbolizes freedom, curiosity and change. This was not intended, says the artist but seems to be true at this stage of my career.
The new paintings tell their own stories for sure. They are lighthearted, nostalgic and carry a sense of whimsy and joy as well as some truth. The plan is to start with smaller paintings and larger works will follow. ☐
