NIFF takes center stage

Rika Lisslö Named Chairwoman of the Nordic International Film Festival

When the Nordic International Film Festival was born, it was impossible to imagine where it would be today, 10 years later. Now a Top 10 festival in New York City, NIFF took the opportunity to both look back at where it all started — and what it has become.

At the legendary nightclub The Box – ironically created by Simon Hammerstein, grandson of Oscar Hammerstein II, who was perhaps the most influential lyricist and librettist of American Theater – NIFF invited their team and filmmakers to immortalize the milestone with a sustainable fashion photoshoot, which meant that all fashion was encouraged to be borrowed, thrifted or reused.

It was a curious photoshoot, turning the lens towards the people who are normally behind it. But the result was extraordinary. Throughout the 10 years, NIFF’s dedication to celebrate the filmmakers and the filmmaking process have built toward their vision “Between Family and Formal”, a time to celebrate both filmmakers and guests and highlighting the excellence of Nordic cinema on an international stage. But also, to create connections, lifelong bonds and new collaborations. There’s a reason they are all called “The NIFF Family.”

To celebrate a decade of the Nordic International Film Festival’s legacy, this anniversary photo shoot honored the art of storytelling, from ancient theater to modern cinema. At The Box, the team got to immerse themselves and get inspired by iconic films and plays—by breaking the 4th wall of cinema and finally taking the stage themselves at a dramatic arena.

Much like how the clothes in a movie are used to define a character, we ourselves become storytellers each time we get ready to leave the house. And if you’re leaving the house for a Red-Carpet event in NY? Fuggedaboutit.

The anniversary shoot captured the spirit of connection and creativity that defines NIFF and its community. It is a vision realized, a platform that champions Nordic filmmakers and diverse storytelling on a global stage, celebrating commitment to inclusivity, equality and artistic excellence.

The NIFF team were all dressed and styled by Caycee Black, a Project Runway alumni and returning contestant for the upcoming season, emphasizing the theatrical and circus-like atmosphere while staying true to NIFF’s fashion forward emphasis.
