How Katie Hamilton Shaffer Built Feast it Forward
And why Rotation is the Dream Years in the Making
As guests settle into their seats at Rotation by Feast it Forward inside Napa Valley’s iconic Oxbow Public Market, something extraordinary begins to happen. A chef steps away from the kitchen—not simply to present a dish, but to share the story behind it. A camera crew follows the conversation. Perhaps it’s a recipe passed down through generations, a memory from childhood, or a tradition rooted in a homeland thousands of miles away. Around the room, glasses of Napa Valley wine are raised, conversations begin between strangers, and a meal becomes something much greater than dinner.
This is Rotation.
It is not simply a restaurant. It is a living, evolving culinary experience where every month introduces a new celebrated chef, a new culture, and a new story. Every residency transforms the restaurant, giving guests a reason to return again and again.
To many, Rotation feels like an innovative dining concept.
To founder Katie Hamilton Shaffer, it represents the culmination of more than a decade spent asking one question:
How do you create meaningful human connection through food, wine, music, storytelling, and shared experiences?
The answer became Feast it Forward.
But the journey began long before the first plate was ever served.

Dreaming With Her Eyes Open
Katie Shaffer has never believed that people are meant to follow just one path.
Growing up, she wanted to be everything at once. She dreamed of becoming an artist. She imagined performing on stage. She wanted to attend culinary school until she discovered it didn’t have a soccer team. Instead, she earned an art degree while competing in collegiate athletics before heading to Nashville to pursue a music stint. From there came a season in the budding semi-professional soccer league.
Looking back, none of those experiences appear connected.
To Shaffer, they were preparing her for exactly what she would build.
“I’ve always been a bit of a nomad when it comes to following my passions,” she says. “I don’t think we’re meant to limit ourselves to one version of who we can become.”
When she eventually found herself in Napa Valley, everything clicked.
She realized that what inspired her wasn’t simply exceptional food or remarkable wine—it was what happened because of them. The conversations. The friendships. The laughter. The collaborations. The way complete strangers could become lifelong friends simply by sharing a table.
That realization would become the foundation of Feast it Forward.
Building a Lifestyle Brand Around Connection
In 2011, Shaffer founded Feast it Forward with an ambitious vision: to create a lifestyle brand centered around four universal passions—food, wine, entertainment, and giving back.
She launched Feast.Network, a digital platform producing original content featuring acclaimed chefs, vintners, musicians, athletes, actors, and tastemakers from across the country. Rather than simply producing cooking shows or interviews, the platform celebrated the stories behind the people who shape our culture.
For nearly five years, Shaffer and her team traveled the country filming original programming, building a community of viewers who wanted more than recipes—they wanted authentic experiences.
Eventually, she realized something important.
Digital storytelling could inspire people.
But physical experiences could transform them.

The Studio: A Click-and-Mortar Vision
In 2016, Shaffer began building what many considered an unconventional idea: a “click-and-mortar” destination where media, hospitality, commerce, entertainment, and philanthropy could all exist under one roof.
After nearly two years of construction, The Studio by Feast it Forward opened in downtown Napa.
It wasn’t simply a wine tasting room.
It wasn’t simply a film studio.
It wasn’t retail.
It wasn’t an event venue.
It was all of those things.
Guests could enjoy wines from a curated collective of boutique vintners, explore products featured throughout the venue, attend intimate events, watch original programming being filmed live, and shop the experiences surrounding them.
Shaffer often jokes that her sponsors become “the Coke can in the movie.”
Rather than interrupting the guest experience, they naturally become part of it.
Just as importantly, The Studio reflected another pillar of the company’s mission—purpose.
During live-stream events featuring celebrity chefs, musicians, athletes, and entertainers, one hundred percent of audience ticket proceeds supported charities selected by the visiting talent, proving that hospitality and philanthropy could successfully coexist.

Reinventing During the Pandemic
Then, like the rest of the world, everything changed.
When the pandemic forced hospitality businesses to close their doors, Shaffer refused to stand still.
She transformed her parking lot into an outdoor wine garden and dining destination, creating space where local restaurants without patios could continue serving guests while boutique wineries maintained an important connection with consumers.
Then inspiration struck again.
Behind The Studio sat an underutilized office building and parking lot.
With the support of the City of Napa and the surrounding community, Shaffer transformed it into The Yard by Feast it Forward.
Built around colorful shipping containers, live entertainment, culinary experiences, and immersive brand activations, The Yard became a year-round festival experience celebrating everything Feast it Forward had always stood for.
“The pandemic brought some of the hardest days of my career,” Shaffer reflects. “There were countless sleepless nights. But looking back, it also forced me to think bigger than I ever had before.”

Every Chapter Led to Rotation
By then, a pattern had emerged.
Every challenge became an opportunity.
Every setback demanded innovation.
Every chapter naturally led to the next.
The Studio proved media and hospitality belonged together.
The Yard proved people craved immersive experiences.
Together, they inspired an even bigger question.
What if a restaurant could evolve the same way?
What if it never became static?
What if every month guests could experience an entirely new culinary journey without ever leaving Napa Valley?
That vision became Rotation.

More than a restaurant, Rotation is a chef residency where acclaimed culinary talent from around the world calls Napa Valley home, beyond a destination.
Under the culinary leadership of Executive Chef Jeff Mosher, Rotation debuted its groundbreaking chef residency program in February 2026 with legendary chef Martin Yan. What followed has been a remarkable succession of acclaimed culinary talent, including Top Chef winner Tristen Epps, Nyesha Arrington, Lee Anne Wong, Lamar Moore, and celebrated Ukrainian chef Anna Voloshyna. This August, Chef Robert Sulatycky continues the tradition, with an ever-growing roster of world-class chefs ensuring that every month—and every visit—offers an entirely new culinary experience.
Rather than centering the restaurant around one permanent chef, each residency transforms the menu, the atmosphere, and the guest experience through the chef’s own culture, traditions, and personal story.
But perhaps the residency model’s greatest strength is something rarely found in modern dining—time.
Instead of appearing for one guest dinner before flying home, each chef becomes part of the community. They collaborate with local farmers and vintners, mentor aspiring culinary professionals, engage with guests throughout their residency, and share not only recipes but the stories, traditions, and heritage behind every plate.
Guests don’t simply dine.
They become part of a chef’s journey.
A Community of Partners
Building something this ambitious requires collaborators who believe in the vision.
Rotation proudly welcomes Visit Napa Valley as its Presenting Sponsor, alongside an exceptional family of partners including Toast, Ariane Fine Porcelain, Chefs’ Warehouse, Hestan Culinary, Waring, TriMark, and many others whose support helps elevate every residency.
Together, these partners provide resident chefs with world-class products, equipment, and hospitality resources while helping create an unforgettable guest experience.
More importantly, they share a common belief that the future of hospitality is experiential, collaborative, and driven by authentic storytelling.

Building a Platform for Storytellers
From the very beginning, Feast it Forward was never intended to be just a hospitality company—it was envisioned as a network built around extraordinary people.
What started as Feast.Network, a digital platform showcasing the stories of chefs, musicians, winemakers, athletes, artists, and tastemakers, has evolved into something much larger: a place where creators aren’t simply featured—they’re given a stage.
Whether it’s a celebrated chef leading a residency at Rotation, a musician performing at The Yard, a vintner sharing the story behind a bottle, or a visionary partner collaborating on a new experience, every part of Feast it Forward exists to elevate the people who inspire others.
“It’s always been about creating opportunities for remarkable people to do what they do best,” says Shaffer. “We simply provide the stage.”

The Journey Is Just Beginning
Shaffer’s ambitions extend well beyond Napa Valley.
She envisions additional Feast it Forward destinations across the country, each reflecting the culture of its city while sharing the same commitment to storytelling, hospitality, and connection. She sees opportunities to expand purpose-driven lifestyle products, immersive experiences, and technologies that continue bringing people together in meaningful ways. Shaffer is also launching a hospitality and experience driven app that will be unveiled in Fall 2026, presented by Feast it Forward, going far beyond the wine country walls.
Yet despite everything still ahead, Rotation remains the emotional heart of the journey.
It represents years of dreaming, building, pivoting, rebuilding, and believing when others couldn’t yet see the vision.
“People ask if Rotation is the dream,” Shaffer says.
“I tell them it’s what happened because I never stopped believing in the dream.”
For guests, Rotation is an unforgettable meal.
For Katie Shaffer, it is proof that every detour, every challenge, every sleepless night, and every leap of faith led exactly where it was meant to.
Because Feast it Forward was never just about opening a restaurant.
It was about creating places where cultures are celebrated, stories are shared, strangers become friends, and every seat at the table offers the possibility of connection.
And in a world that often moves too fast, perhaps the greatest luxury is slowing down long enough to truly connect. Reserve your table, plan your escape, and discover why there has never been a better time to experience Napa Valley. ☐
