Nestled in the heart of Sonoma, in a breathtakingly beautiful setting where the Dry Creek, Russian River, and Alexander Valleys meet, Montage Healdsburg is a contemporary, elegant wine-country retreat spread across 258 private acres of rolling vineyards, heritage oak tree groves, and hazelnut trees. The ultra-luxurious resort features 130 contemporary, bungalow-style guestrooms and suites which immerse guests in the surrounding nature, each featuring floor-to-ceiling windows with one-third of its space dedicated to outdoor living. In addition to close access to the region’s outdoor recreation opportunities and exclusive wine experiences, resort guests can enjoy amenities including the world class 11,500-square-foot Spa Montage, two spacious resort pools, and exquisite farm-to-table dining at Hazel Hill, Scout Field Bar or Hudson Springs Bar and Grill. On property are vines tended by Montage’s partner, Jesse Katz and his flagship winery, the renowned Aperture Cellars. My guestroom at Montage Healdsburg was absolutely stunningly beautiful inside and out!

Montage Healdsburg prides itself as a wellness destination. At Spa Montage Healdsburg, elevated 20 feet above the grapevines, guests can delight in a secluded sanctuary that reflects the natural serenity of wine country through treatments and wellness experiences inspired by the land. Infused with the spirit of the surrounding area and featuring earthy, sophisticated relaxation areas and peaceful treatment rooms, Spa Montage was designed to relieve stress and restore vitality. Expert providers use a variety of techniques for massage, facial, and body services, which incorporate botanical blends crafted from plants located on property, immersing guests in the energy of the land. The spa also offers a Zero-edge adult pool, a serene Yoga Garden hidden among the vineyards, a state-of-the-art fitness center with cardio machines, strength training equipment, and free weights, a fitness studio with aerobic classes and private trainers, separate men’s and women’s lounges with steam rooms, custom bath products, and relaxation areas, and the full-service Salon Montage. True to Sonoma’s tradition of culinary excellence, Montage Healdsburg offers a variety of refined dining experiences that celebrate the bounty of the land. Dining at Hazel Hill, the signature restaurant at Montage Healdsburg, is a feast for the senses. The name “Hazel Hill” pays homage to the 1.5-acre hazelnut tree grove at the resort’s entrance. Overlooking the property, vineyards, and Mount St. Helena in the distance, the terrace is the perfect spot for dinner as the sun sinks below the horizon, turning Mount St. Helena a spectacular shade of lavender! The dining room is warm and welcoming, with its interactive expo kitchen and exhibit pantry proudly showcasing the workspace of the culinary team. The restaurant’s design, like the entire resort, pulls from nature’s palette with dark-hued leathers and woods, accented by copper and gold and illuminated by natural light streaming in through floor-to-ceiling windows. The semi-private Oak Room is a modern, whimsical treehouse, encased in glass and suspended above the earth. The fully private dining room Madrone features a private balcony that highlights wine country’s enviable heritage of seamlessly merging indoors with the outdoors.

Hazel Hill crafts inventive California cuisine infused with the warmth of France and has quickly become Healdsburg’s destination for upscale, yet approachable dining in a spectacular setting. Like the rest of the resort, the restaurant is an oasis of comfort and refinement where guests enjoy local flavors and a seasonal terroir-to-table menu showcasing locally sourced, seasonally driven cuisine focusing on the northern California region, complemented by some of the best wine labels from Sonoma County and the world over. In the spirit of wine country, experienced sommeliers are on hand to guide guests in selecting the perfect glass or bottle from an extensive list, as well as creative cocktails crafted by expert mixologists.

“I wish for our guests to simply relax, enjoy seasonal California cuisine with a warm French touch and take in the beautiful surroundings our resort has to offer.”—Executive Chef Jason Pringle.

I highly suggest the Chef’s Tasting Menu. Crafted by Executive Chef Jason Pringle, the six-course prix fixe menu highlights only the freshest ingredients, as well as the bounty of Sonoma wine country—everything we tasted was exceptional—balanced, flavorful, and beautiful, a great expression of this extraordinary locale. We started with Ahi Tuna with avocado, grapefruit, and basil, Gazpacho with celtuce, wild onion, and rose hip, Goguette Olive Boule with duck fat butter, fennel, and sel gris; Petrale Sole with tarragon, brioche, and Sauce Nantua; Squab with blueberry, pithivier, and amaranth; and my personal favorite Saffron Chitarra, house made pasta served with Dungeness crab, fennel, and Calabrian chili pepper—a highlight of our trip! Main courses included a stunningly beautiful Halibut wrapped in squash blossoms in buttermilk with sorrels. The Black Cod with corn, piperade, and stone fruit was a great early summer dish. For dessert, we tasted the Apple Almond Gateau with shortbread, orange, and buttermilk ice cream, and the Strawberry Cream Cake with blackberry, basil, and rhubarb sorbet before heading to the pool for a twilight soak in the hot tub and refreshing swim in the beautifully illuminated pool we had all to ourselves.
